The MTA's smoking ban went into effect on Wednesday, February 17, ending the 3 month grace period during which violators could claim ignorance. The ban is now officially being enforced and anyone caught smoking on outdoor platforms, ticketing areas, or boarding areas in or around Metro-North and LIRR train stations, will face possible ejection from the train or station, fines of up to $50 or 30 days in jail, or a combination of all three. Metro-North stations in Connecticut are not subject to the law.
